Forests with Quercus petraea and Carpinus betulus of the plains and low hills of south eastern central Europe on varied soil types (both calcareous and siliceous substrates). The shrub- and herb layer are dominated by subcontinental and submediterranean plant species. They occur in shady, humid valleys and slopes, particularly on deep soils but also on hill tops with shallow, oligotrophic substrates. Syntaxa include, Primulo veris-Carpinetum, Fraxino pannonici-Carpinetum
