Spanish national inventory on road mortality of vertebrates.

The authors promoted a national-level survey on road mortality of vertebrate in Spain, on a monthly basis between 1991-1994. More than 43,000 vertebrates belonging to 303 taxa were counted, so that a minimum of 10 million road-killed vertebrates per year was estimated. The pattern varied widely among species, distribution, and traffic characteristic. The authors claim that mitigation measures are absent in most roads. Mortality due to railway collision is mentioned. They also state that habitat fragmentation is another effect of transportation infrastructure, but it is difficult to study because not enough time has passed since infrastructure construction, and because it requires detailed information on the status of involved species. The authors believe that wolf and lynx (Lynx pardinus) populations have been divided by infrastructure, the only measures taken being the establishment of a number of tunnels for lynx along the High Speed Railway between Madrid and Seville.
