The Mar Menor Catastrophe: Educational Catharsis from the Sound and Visual Perspective

This paper is based on the suffocating situation of Mar Menor, in the southeast of Spain, which has become visible in recent times with the appearance of tons of dead fish in its waters. However, this is but the tip of the iceberg of a set of anthropogenic actions sustained over time. The main objective of this paper is to show practices generated by high-school students living in the region in question, as part of a research in which the visual and sound arts try to empathize with the territory and recognize the need to sensitize the new generations in a change that previous generations have not perpetrated, showing an unequivocal will to reconcile with the ecosystem. The methodology used arises from the union of curricular aspects of the students' educational programs with avant-garde artistic initiatives applied to education. The students developed creative activities by generating evocations through plastic compositions and sound files, from which to establish interpretive keys on how to understand the coexistence of all the members of the surroundings. Thus, the results obtained show the capacity for analysis and solidity of the proposals formulated by the students, in addition to the development of undeniable creative behaviors of high value. As a result, it is concluded that the contribution of the research and its originality lies in the fact that it is young people from the affected area who, from an emotional level and through a special connection with the situation that has occurred, establish a new order of relationship with the ecosystem through the arts, imbibing the suffering of the habitat and symbolically representing it, which makes it easier for subsequent generations to correctly interpret their insertion in the environment as one more element of harmonious coexistence.
