La mortalitat d’animals salvatges a les carreteres de les Balears: estudi pilot a Llucmajor (Mallorca).

Roadkills were identified and counted in a physiographically uniform area in the island of Mallorca. The transects involved a limited selection of roads spanning a wide variation of transit characteristics. Virtually all land vertebrates occurring in the area were represented, and the mean observed mortality was 36.5 animals per kilometer. There are significant regressions of mortality on average speed of vehicles, and on the product of average speed by intensity. A graphic model of roafkill detectability is presented in order to discuss the various factors that should be evaluated in a larger study. From the data already obtained, the number of wild vertebrates killed every year on the roads of the Balearic islands can be estimated at the order of 105. The analyses presented here strongly suggest that a reduction of maximum speed from 120 to 80 Km/hr would translate into a 50% reduction of roadkills. It seems clear that the currently developing strategies for transportation sustainability should explicitly consider the most direct impact of transit on biodiversity.
