Habitat selection, activity peaks and strategies to avoid road mortality by the little owl Athene noctua: A new methodology on owls research.

Little owls (Athene noctua) were censused 200 times at night with the aid of a light intensifier along a 40 km road-transect which ran across habitats allowing enough visibility. Marshes and olive-tree fields accounted for most of the transect length (24 km). Among other components of owl behaviour, it was investigated whether the number of owls foraging close to the road was affected by traffic intensity. More owls were spotted at times when the traffic load was lowest and less owls than expected foraged at traffic peaks. The authors suggest that this might be an antipredatory response to vehicles. Another possible explanation would be that little owls have problems to detect prey under the strong visually/auditory pollution experienced near roads when traffic density is high.

Se realizaron 200 censos nocturnos del mochuelo (Athene noctua) con la ayuda de un intensificador de luz en un transecto de 40 km de carretera que transcurría por hábitats que permitían una visibilidad suficiente. Las marismas y campos de olivos representaron la mayor parte del transecto. Entre otros componentes del comportamiento del mochuelo, se investigó si el número de mochuelos que cazaban en proximidad a la carretera fue afectado por la intensidad de tráfico. Se detectaron más mochuelos cuando el volumen de tráfico fue más bajo y menos mochuelos de los esperado cuando fue máximo. Los autores sugieren que esta situación puede ser una respuesta anti-depredadora frente a los vehículos. Otra posible explicación sería que los mochuelos tienen problemas para detectar sus presas por causa de la fuerte contaminación visual/acústica que se da cerca de las carreteras cuando la intensidad de tráfico es elevada.
