Habitat assessment of a relict brown bear Ursus arctos population in northern Spain.

Habitat quality in the area occupied by the brown bear (Ursus arctos) eastern population in Cantabrican Mountains was assessed, based on radio-tracking locations and bear signs. Distance to the nearest village and distance to the nearest paved road were included among explanatory variables. Results showed that the area permanently occupied by brown bears (suitable habitat) had less than half the density of roads found in secondary habitat. Unhabited area had a even higher road density. Roads probably do not prevent bears from occurring in an area, but they certainly increase the risk of deliberate or accidental killing of bears by humans.

Se ha evaluado la calidad del hábitat ocupado por el oso pardo (Ursus arctos) en la población oriental de la cordillera cantábrica, basado en localizaciones radiotelemétricas y señales de oso. La distancia al pueblo más cercano y la distancia a la carretera asfaltada más próxima se incluyeron entre las variables explicativas. Los resultados demostraron que el área ocupada de forma permanente por los osos (hábitat idóneo) tenía la mitad de la densidad de carreteras que se encontraba en el hábitat secundario. Las áreas no habitadas por el oso tenían una densidad de carreteras aún más elevada. Las carreteras probablemente no impiden que los osos vivan en una zona pero seguramente aumentan el riesgo de la muerte accidental o intencionada de osos por causa del contacto con las personas.
