Fagus orientalis forests of the Western Pontic range, the Strandja-Istranka mountains and the Eastern Balkan Range. The understory is typically rich in laurophyllous shrubs of euxinian affinities such as Rhododendron ponticum, Daphne pontica, Laurocerasus officinalis, Ilex colchica, Ruscus hypoglossum, Vaccinium arctostaphylos and with the euxinian herbaceous species such as Primula acaulis ssp. rubra, Trachyistemon orientalis, Teucrium lamifolium Cyclamen coum and Epimedium pubigerum. In the Eastern Balkan Range the laurophylous shrubs are not present and the most characteristic taxa are Primula acaulis ssp. rubra and Trachystemon orientalis.
