Forests dominated by Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii (mountain birch), occuring and often dominating the subalpine belt of the Scandinavian mountain (fell) chain (Fjllen). Occur also in isolated northern Fennoscandian fells and in gently sloping or flat subarctic (hemiarctic) uplands, particularly in N Finland. Due to different ecological characteristics, vegetation varies from lichen poor and dwarf shrub dominated types to those rich-in-tall-herbs.
